In a single year at the height of the new depression, a million homes went into foreclosure. The residents of these homes were suddenly faced with the reality that the place they raised their families and lived their lives was actually owned by the bank.

“When you walk into these houses, you feel something of the former owners.” artist Paul Smedberg explained, “You can imagine them packing up their belongings, hauling them out to pickup trucks or vans. So many of these houses contain countless objects – from toy parts to sofas – that were left in the house in a haphazard interior design of abandonment.

“I took photos in a number of these foreclosed houses and used the photos to ‘paint’ or ‘remix’ new images which capture the ghosts of a household now gone.”
